He began referring to himself as the Apostle, although, contrary to published reports, he never claimed to be the reincarnation of Paul. And then two years ago, after being prodded by his parishioners, he pulled the trigger and declared himself the Second Coming of Christ.

"It was tough for me, because already I was being persecuted," he says. "I thought about it for years."

When people wonder about his progression, ask him why it took him more than 30 years to decide he was Christ, he says, "Well, it's like you. You were a young man, then you got married, then you became a father, then your kids have kids and you became a grandfather. You grow into things in life."

De Jesús has grown into some lavish tastes. According to his daughter/accountant Joann De Jesús, his salary last year was $136,000, but that doesn't count all the gifts he received from wealthy devotees. He's quite the clotheshorse, often seen sporting fine suits and gold jewelry, and he drives a 7 series BMW. When the Houston Press visited him at his Missouri City home, he joked that reporters always liked to talk about his Rolexes, but "now it is no more Rolex, that's the problem. Now I went to Miami, to a group of businessmen, and they gave me a Pasha," a Cartier watch encrusted with enough diamonds to finance the overthrow of a small African government.

Charismatic leader with messianic tendencies? Check. Unwavering devotion from his followers? Check. Buckets of cash? Check.

Yep, that's right; it's time to play Is This a Cult?, the exciting game where you, the reader, get to decide whether or not we've got another Waco or Jonestown on our hands.

Some folks in Miami seem to think so. When reporter Mariah Blake first broke the story of De Jesús in English for Miami New Times, a sister paper of the Press, she interviewed Regina Albarracin, the mother of a man who had devoted his entire life to Creciendo en Gracia.

"They're stupid people who believe in stupidities," said Albarracin. "They're like those people in Waco, Texas. When you go there, you get brainwashed."

After Blake's story came out, Creciendo en Gracia got its own page on RickRoss.com, a site devoted to tracking destructive cults.

De Jesús has heard these accusations before. His response: "Anything people don't understand, they call it a cult. Because we are new. But I could call them a cult. A false cult. I'm a cult of truth, a truthful cult."

There are big differences between himself and the likes of David Koresh or Jim Jones, he says. "Number one: They didn't have the gospel of uncircumcision, which caused fear. We preach a different gospel. And number two: My people are too wise. Whatever I say to them, they say, 'Where is that written?'"

Apparently it's written somewhere that other faiths should be protested. Loudly. More than 80 followers of De Jesús showed up at a Protestant festival in Miami last November, shouting and holding signs that read, "Your pastor lies" and "The devil was destroyed." His followers have disrupted church services in Havana and orchestrated simultaneous protests in 22 Colombian cities. All told, there have been actions in more than a dozen countries.

"Sometimes the other people get upset," says De Jesús, "but we do it peacefully."

De Jesús envisions a global Government of God, with himself at the head, that will bring all nations to the obedience of faith.

"We're not looking to go and get the local governments out," he says. "We're just in the beginning of something bigger."

And that Government just might be based out of Houston.

De Jesús moved to Missouri City a few months ago. Miami was too crowded and he preferred somewhere quieter, he says, neglecting to mention that two of his administrators recently divorced their wives for other women, a breakdown that could help explain what is generally accepted to be a slow decline in Miami membership.

Nestled in a soulless Missouri City neighborhood, his two-story abode bears all the trappings of suburban paradise: tan walls, tan carpet, plush couches, pool table, flat-screen TV; sparsely decorated, not a thing out of place. It's cookie-cutter, even if its occupant isn't.

"Christianity today, that's the nonsense," says De Jesús. "I would love to eradicate from the Earth those teachings."

On a recent Wednesday night, Creciendo en Gracia's Houston fellowship met near Sharpstown High School, in a suite in an industrial strip center where you'd expect to see tire-repair and car-audio shops. Inside were about 100 folding chairs, lined up facing an unoccupied podium adorned with the seal of the Government of God. Forty or so Hispanics -- some in suits, others in jeans; some old, others in baby carriages -- sat in rapt attention, watching the pull-down projection screen where De Jesús was expected to make his appearance.

Creciendo en Gracia's pastors rarely address their local flocks -- this keeps the message pure, the logic goes -- and all sermons are simulcast live from Miami. But you'd guess De Jesús was standing right there in the flesh, judging from the way Houston's believers stood and cheered when he appeared on the screen and began preaching his message of salvation.

After the service, the people gathered together, gossiping and talking gospel like they would at any other church. There were wide-eyed zealots who parroted back De Jesús's teachings verbatim, but there were also folks like Miguel Corrigeux, a 37-year-old truck driver who has a more muted respect for his savior.

Corrigeux says he experimented with different faiths -- evangelical, Pentecostal, Baptist and Catholic -- before discovering the gospel of De Jesús two years ago.

"One day I was just flipping the channels and I saw him talking about the devil being destroyed forever," he says. "It's really changing my life."

No longer does Corrigeux believe he's a sinner. Nor does he believe in hell.

  6. This man is already telling people who he is and they are not hearing him. He's telling them that he is a thief. What does a thief do? He steals, kills and destroy. Jesus said that he will come AS a thief in the night. That means that He will come when no expects Him to come, just as no one knows when a thief will come and break in their house. But finally in St. Matthew 24:24 it says, "For there shall arise false Christ, and false prophets and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect." If these people are not careful this will be another Jim Jones tragedy.

  10. rather, uh, sudden, don't you think? perhaps he, the "divine being", should try not contradicting himself. here's a suggestion, just a suggestion: DON'T TRY TO CHANGE TRADITION IN A NIGHT! if the "old law" is still around after 2000 years, i'm pretty sure that its become the usual, and therefore the more accepted, and therfore, more established and hareder to change.

I know you may be thinking that your little girl is going to take after you, but we still won't believe in you. I won't as long as I'm living and don't worry im 14, but when I get older, my job is to meet those 666 people and rebuke the demon you put in them and make them turn their lives to Jesus because if people believe in ghosts, and goblins and voodoo, then they could believe that Jesus is going to save them and I'm going to devote my life to doing this.     Here's just one example: He contradicts himself in the interview and his own website. He says in the interview that he performs miracles everyday, healing himself and others. On his website, he cites the verse about false teachers doing signs and wonders, and says he does neither, so he's not a false teacher. Well, which is it?

  13. Well anyone who has any biblical knowledge knows that this guy is an AntiChrist. America while fighting terrorism should be knock this guy off. Yea, might sound a little extreme. But when do we start to define what is and what is not extreme? Bush's war tactics and use of the American tax-payer's hard-earned dollars, extreme? Not finding Osama, extreme? This country is so free that we have allowed our morals and beliefs be hindered by freedom. The World Trade Center travesty is a perfect example. We compromised our morals for retalliation on Al-Quaida and not to even mention our freedom to feel safe,(clearing my throat) the Patriot Act. If it takes extreme measures to take our country back from polical and religious figures who are digging a mass grave for all of us, I'm for it. Is what Martin Luther King Jr. did extreme? He did what was right and what he felt was good not only for African Americans but for a country who claims and claimed to be of the Christian faith. I am a Christian, maybe not the best, but I recognize who God is and what he has done for me. It's time for Christians and TRUE believers in Christ to take control. de Jesus has followers who sport tattoos with the number 666 and are attacking chruches and places of christian worship, THAT"S EXTREME and must be stopped by any means neccessary!!

  14. I do not believe this person is the Anti-Christ, he doesnt deserve Biblical mention or historical remembrance. The flesh in me wants to get angry and say horrible things about this man's teachings but i will refrain and live out the example of the true Living God, Jesus Christ, remember, he did not stay dead, HE ROSE FROM THE DEAD 3 DAYS LATER AND IS STILL ALIVE TODAY!!! Mr. De Jesus is obviously a pawn of the true enemy, Satan and we need to pray for him and his mislead followers!!! Jesus died for the sins of us all, even these confused lost souls. And one more thing i would like to point out in the case of Mr. De Jesus, you either believe the Word of God or you don't, you don't get to pick and choose what you want from the Bible, it is not a buffet table where you get to take what you want and leave the rest for somebody with a different taste than yours. You cant preach part of it and expect acceptance of your teaching while disclaiming the validity of the rest of it out of the other side of your mouth. Please take a little time to truly study the word of God!!! You may have a true Messianic experience if you open your ears and heart to the teaching of the true Messiah, Jesus Christ!!!

  23. I've heard of a psychological condition where those affected have a "God complex" and truly believe they have special powers when they don't. I forget what it's called but it appears he may have it. It's a shame that people are giving his "so called ministry" their hard earned money.     Interesting that the author of the article does not mention anything about this guy using the 666 tattooed, or I didn't notice this in his article, because I was too furious, especially after I have just seen the same story on abc at Primetime (Tue 6th mar 2007). Interesting also that the author of the article chose as a title "This Man Thinks He's Jesus H. Christ!" Because I am sure that "this man" does not think at all, not for a second, that he is Jesus Christ, he knows perfectly who he is (shall we call him.. a fraud?! But he wants to make whoever he can to believe that he is Jesus Christ! AS LONG AS HE CAN MAKE MONEY, NOTHING SEEM TO BOTHER HIM. And if he find fools to follow him and give him his money..   37. this man is not jesus or of any such thing. He is in fact the complete opposite, with his sinister smile you cannot see what lies underneath. His eyes dark from years of sin and anger, who is he you ask the demon himself. Jesus has blue eyes and long brown hair from years of enlightenment and taking away peoples anger and making them believe. Not only does this man use technology to show his sermons and bring with it the age of believing in sin but he does so with devices we use to summon jesus to make him realize of who he is.   40. Crazy does not begin to cover this. What I do know is I do agree with De Jesus Miranda on ONE thing (don’t be surprised even insane people occasionally make sense)
    the role that religion plays: just look at how divided the world is today: each religion claiming that theirs is the true word of God like a bunch of school kids fighting over who is the coolest and the baddest...only this is bloodier and the body count just keeps on getting higher. History tends to repeat itself, this has happened so many times throughout history that you would think we'd have learned by now?
    I always wanted to ask this question who gave De Jesus, me, yourselves the right to judge or presume to know what is God's heart or His divine plan?

  42. The world's problems are from religion yes...but from made up religion. Christianity is the one true religion. All others are imposters and they cause the problems in the world today by deceiving the masses into thinking their crap is truth. Terrorists and Islam is the problem not Christianity. Terrorists of Islam are the ones that committing suicide and in the process killing crowds of people at a time. Terrorists are the reason we are fighting a war today and terrorists and evil doers are the reason for all problems. Christianity is not a religion...it is the one way, the one truth, and your only way to eternal salvation. Like it or not everyone finds this truth out eventually. The question is will you find out in life or after death when it is too late! Act now people! Don't conform to the sinning society that we live in. Don't let them tell you Christianity is just another religion and that anti-christs are ok. Don't fall into sin just because it's "politically correct"! Be strong and fight for what is right because if you don't, then no one will.

  46. I know for a fact that he is not Jesus Christ because the Bible tells us that Jesus will not walk among us on this earth because we are all unclean. This earth is also unclean. I think people are very confused about the second coming of Christ. It does not say that Jesus will come to you in plain clothes walking around like you and me. The second coming refers to the rapture. Folks read your Bible and put your faith in God,not man. God Bless You All!!!

The Bible might say that Jesus will come as a thief in the night, but what that means is that He will come as unexpected as a thief at night. It sure does not mean that He will come back marking 666 on people when 666 is the mark of the anti-christ Revelations speaks of. Nice try though...NOT!

  53. Many will come in his name do not believe it if you want to find Jesus look into the eyes of your neighbor and find the Love. We all have a part of him in us for we are all his children. Those who claim to be him are of someone else and their power to fool the simple comes from below! Yes it is what it is and he will eventually come again but it will not be to shake your hand and say well done and good job for the truth has been seen and what eye has not seen nor ear has not heard the saving power of God. Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world May he have mercy on our souls...
