Published: May 31, 2007If the squeezebox is your thing, you won't want to miss the Texas Folklife's 18th annual Accordion Kings & Queens concert. This year's diverse lineup features Chubby Carrier and the Bayou Swamp Band, Mingo Saldivar y sus Tremendos Cuatro Espadas, and Ginny Mac and the Road to Texas Band. A third-generation zydeco player, Carrier is featured in the new IMAX movie Hurricane on the Bayou. Conjunto music legend Saldivar is a National Heritage Fellow and two-time Grammy nominee. And this year's Queen, Ginny Mac, is an up-and-coming Western swing performer.
The show will also feature performances from the three finalists from The Big Squeeze, Texas Folklife's first statewide accordion competition. The contestants will be accompanied by Houston's own Avizo. And internationally lauded director Hector Galán will be filming the contest for an upcoming documentary (also to be called The Big Squeeze).
