    What becomes a gossip columnist most?

Eula McNulty, 24 at the time, told reporters she wanted to put her seven-month-old son up for adoption, and responded to the Adoption Center of Choice's Yellow Page ad. The agency paid for her flight to its office in Orem, Utah. After McNulty approved of the adoptive couple the agency introduced her to, Adoption Center for Choice gave her $1,300 in cash and sent her back to Chicago. What should have been a smooth exchange of an envelope stuffed with cash for a kid gained notoriety when McNulty changed her mind, but was unable to undo the adoption. (The deadline for a mother and/or father to revoke consent for adoption varies among states, with the most common [15 states] being 72 hours. In Utah, it is 36 hours).

This brings us back to James C. Webb, the aforementioned insurance agent. Although Adoption Center of Choice is located outside Salt Lake City, it was created by and is owned by Webb. Webb's business address is also listed as the address for the Abraham Center of Life's California office, incorporated in February 2007.

Before his multifaceted insurance office was either of those entities, it was home base for A Heart of Gold Adoptions, incorporated in California in 1995 and since dissolved. A 2003 Yellow Pages ad for A Heart of Gold Adoptions lists a Web site and toll-free number that directs people to Adoption Center of Choice, never identified in the ad. While Adoption Center of Choice's Web site features people who are supposedly on staff, no names are mentioned anywhere. But a quick check of state records lists the executive director as GiGi Allred and the owner as James C. Webb.

Webb did not return calls, and Allred wasn't much help. When asked why an ad for something called A Heart of Gold Adoptions directs people to Adoption Center of Choice, Allred said she had no comment. She also had no comment when asked if Webb was in any way affiliated with her agency.

Back to Jennalee Ryan: While she explicitly stated she was strictly an advertiser for Abraham Center of Life, she would not name the person she said actually runs the company.

The only thing she said was, "This particular person also happens to own a licensed adoption agency." She would not name the agency, but she was quick to say it wasn't called the Abraham Center of Life. "He went and registered a whole new company name...He's actually put together a surrogacy, egg donor and embryo donation [service]."

Ryan reiterates: "I advertise. I get names and phone numbers and I hand them to him and I get paid a monthly fee for my advertising."

So, just to make this absolutely clear: Ryan, who advertises for something called the Abraham Center of Life, is paid to refer birth mothers and adoptive parents to a licensed adoption agency that is definitely not the same Abraham Center of Life in California that shares an address with the former A Heart of Gold Adoptions and the current Adoption Center of Choice, which battled adoption consent laws in Utah and reportedly paid a mother $1,300 in cash for her baby.

Got it?

Ryan says she has a list of 2,000 people looking to snag a frozen embryo, not to mention those seeking traditional adoption services. She no longer advertises in the Yellow Pages, sticking instead to her Web site's traffic and word of mouth in online adoption forums.

After speaking to the Press, Ryan tweaked the Abraham Center's Web site, removing among other things a discussion of how much Abagails Silver Spoon charges for adoption. When the Press spoke with Ryan, the site stated that "Abagails Silver Spoon Adoptions, Inc., charges a flat fee of $8,300. This is for a two-year advertising contract. In addition, you will be required to pay a home study fee [of] $1,500–$2,500..."

She also removed a section dealing with the cost to purchase eggs, which began with a $4,800 base fee to help "advertising, expense account management [and] travel coordination," among other things.

But those changes weren't as radical as the ones Ryan originally intended when she proposed the Press drop the story on her and instead have a reporter write a minibiography on the Abraham Center's site and then cowrite a book about her life and the trouble with American adoption services in general.

Writing the definitive biography on Ryan would be quite an undertaking. If the book began with the way Ryan usually likes her story told, the challenge would arise from the very beginning.

"First, let me introduce myself," it would start. "My name is..."

And then what?

  3. first of all no one knows this amazing woman, shes been helping save lives and giving women a chance to be happy and have a child of their own, as far as our personell life anyone can dig deep enough and see what they whant to see. as far as her alias' they were all legal names and has never attempted to deceive anyone with regard to her identity. as far as the services she provides i dont think anyone has any complaints, there are several thousand people that have utilized her services and not one of them gave any input with regard to this article, she gives people a chance to have a family and a life of their own. as far as "un-adoption" is concerned the best interests of everychild is taken into consideration. as far as "sandra" is concerned her biological mother placed her for adoption out of shame, after extensive conversations and multiple visits her bio- mother decided her daughter was more important than her pride. as far as "little gay max" it is very cruel to call a child a flamer especially in a widely publisized document. he was placed with an upper class family that had no other children and was more qualified to focus on his specific needs. there is no way to prove someone isnt "crazy" so i will not even dignify that acccusation with a response. as far as the "great journalism" is concerned im sorry for ANYONE who thinks this is a well written article.

    she is an amazing woman and even better mother, i guess no good deed goes unpunished.

  5. Hi, this is the guy who wrote the story. I just wanted to point out that Sean Acero, the gentleman who posted two identical comments, is Jennalee's/Jennifer's son. He is the "Sean" referred to in one section of the story. I just thought this fact needed to be disclosed. Thanks.

  6. Thanks for clearing up that the poster "sean" is really Jennifer/Jennalees son. I was reading it thinking it was her, and laughing at how ridiculous and horrific the whole thing was, but now that i know the comment is by sean i'll take it seriously.

    i mean, c'mon, if i don't, he may chain me to a tree by my neck and beat me.


    I'm an adoption worker and i cannot believe the audacity and insanity of this woman. i was wondering how anyone could have ever approved her to be an adoptive parent, but reading the article i'm fairly certain she must have done it thought her OWN agency. sounds ethical. adoptions do dissolve or disrupt, sad to say, but really i can't fault her for "un-adopting" (as you refer to it) her two children. if only she would "un-adopt" the rest of them they might have a chance to be somewhat normal and well-adjusted.
    thanks for doing a good job of making this extremely complicated story "understandable." well written.

I am a birthmother who placed a child through Jennalee, and I was extremly happy with the services she offered me, who cares what her personal life is, all that matters is that she is offering women like myself the chance to offer our children a better life and home then we can! I have kept in contact with her throughout the years, an she has always had the best interest of the children at heart. She is a wonderful, caring person, and I have never seen anything vendictive out of her. As far as "crazy" I dont understand how you can say she is crazy, she is doing everything she can to help women and thier children, it just sounds like this artical was written by someone who is jelous that they are not doing this, I cant believe how people are so fast to judge others, are you the one we answer to on judgement day? I DIDN'T THINK SO! If I ever needed to place a child for adoption I would go back and use Jennalee and no other agency!! Thank you Jennalee fo your help and your loving support through the years!! Jennalee keep doing what your doing, I truly believe you are an angel sent from god to help protect his children.

  8. Craig Malisow, you had already said that, and I think its a wonderful thing that he defend his mother, he would know best what type of person she is, better then you and I. What type of person are you to say what she is doing is unethical, she is offering homes and families to babies and children whoe birthparents can not give it, there is nothing wrong with that, and her said that all of her names were legal changes, then who cares if she has 5 differnet names, as long as they are all legal, I just feel taht you people have NOTHING better to do then pick apart someone elses life. Dont you understand all of her life experiences are what have made her such a caring and loving person that she is, I really saddens me to see that there are people out there trying to bring someone down who is just helping gods children, As long as I have known Jennalee, she has not done anything wrong, and I am sure if she had the law would have stepped in by now, so your pathetic story on her, will not hurt her in any way shape or form, it is all just basicly hear-say and for those of you who read this and think she is a "horrible person" you should talk to her yourself, and hear what she has to say, and what she does from her own mouth, dont believe everything you read, I dont believe that she would ever hurt a child, physically or emotionaly, and as far "un-adopting" Again she was doing what she felt was best for the children. You need to grow up and see thats all she wants is for children to be loved and cared for, and she is offering a way for that to be done!

  10. I agree with Sean. I've known this woman almost my entire life and to write such a suggestive and flat out rude article is wrong. She does so much to help children in situations that if made public would make her look like a saint. I'm sure if we dug deep into your past it wouldn't look too peachy keen would it? I believe that she is doing a great service to all women who want their child to have a better life and seek adoption. As sean stated I guess no good deed goes unpunished. In the almost seventeen years that I've known Jenna she has treated me with nothing but kindness and has even offered me a place to stay if need be. I cannot even imagine why the author of this article would even believe to know anything about her. I've watched this women work her a** off helping people who truely need her. In my opinion she deserves nothing but the same joy that she puts forth into the world day after day!
