Local high school students put their camera-phones to work

The theme for May's photo contest for high school students was camera-phones. We didn't care where the kids pointed and clicked, so long as their cameras could also function as gossip hubs.

You can view the complete results online at houstonpress.com, but now it's time to announce the winners, who will receive bookstore gift certificates and be entered in our end-of-the-year showdown for a $1,000 college scholarship.

First place goes to Mariah McWhorter of Kingwood High School for her photo of three-year-old Samantha Clark looking through a tunnel. This snap had it all: lighting, composition, everything.

Whitney Pavlas of Cypress Creek High School takes home second for her beachside pic of a crashing wave surprising a couple of bystanders. Great action. Great color.

Third place goes to Catarina Williams of the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts for her photo of a woman in a window, which featured great framing.

And our online readers' choice was a shot of a turtle by Cynthia Maldonado of Lee High School.
