The pans have been floured, the ballots cast. It’s time to announce the winners for the July and August installment of our photojournalism contest for Houston-area high school students. The theme was food, glorious food.

Marielle B. Reiersgard of the Tenney School takes home first place for her absolutely exquisite photograph of a strawberry. She also won our online Readers’ Choice award. Yasmeen Smalley of Bellaire High School grabs second for her fruity still-life. Whitney Pavlas of Cypress Creek High School gets third for her shot of tomatoes from her grandmother’s garden.

Winners get bookstore gift certificates and are eligible for a $1,000 college scholarship, not to mention the chance to have their work presented by local arts nonprofit FotoFest.

The theme for September is “Back to School” — anything that has to do with teachers, books, classes, lockers…you know, school. For more information, visit blogs.houstonpress.com/houstoned/high_school_photo_contest.
