What becomes a gossip columnist most?

    By Michael Musto

A happenstance arrangement of like-minded musicians whose bands happened to share separate residencies at the same club, Band of Heathens formed out of a sort of modern-day hootenanny atmosphere. Unable to resist the pull of the music, they took their sit-ins a step further into a full-time band, their Wednesday-night standing gig at Austin's Momo's blossoming into regular regional touring. Despite having three frontmen and, let's be honest here, their Austin provenance, this quintet of multi-instrumentalists put songcraft and musicianship far ahead of hipness or fashionability. Mixing classic blues, R&B, country and nearly every other element vital to the origins and traditions of rock and roll, Band of Heathens sounds like what might have happened if The Last Waltz had only been the first step.
