What becomes a gossip columnist most?

    By Michael Musto

Before she was old enough to drive, pianist Joyce Yang played Prokofiev with the Philadelphia Orchestra. Before she could legally have her first drink, she won the silver medal at the 2005 Van Cliburn international piano competition. Kind of makes life’s usual landmarks pale by comparison, no?

Today, Seoul-born Yang, now 21, makes her Houston recital debut. Yang, whose style is emotive yet delicate, has been here before, of course, to perform with the Houston Symphony. (That was after stops at the Kennedy Center, the New York Philharmonic, and the orchestras of Chicago, Fort Worth and Kansas City, among others, along the way), but not in solo recital. Tonight she’ll perform Bach, Schumann and Brahms before she returns to Juilliard — to achieve something spectacular, to be sure. 8 p.m. Wortham Center, 500 Texas. For information, call 713-227-4772 or visit www.spahouston.org. $22 to $47.
Sat., March 1, 8 p.m., 2008
